Bebop could not have reached a level of maturity without the reinvention of the drummer's role courtesy of Max Roach. Miles' arrival on the New York scene coincided with Roach's. The two were friends and Bird's two leading acolytes. In 1949, Roach provides the needed rhythmic spark to the Miles Davis' first legendary group, his "Birth of the Cool" nonet.
