A member of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and saxophonist Charles Lloyd's group in the 1960s, he performed and recorded with Miles in 1969—briefly one of two keyboardists in his touring band, alongside Chick Corea—and became a key member of his 1970-1971 sextet, leading his own trios and quartets from the 1970s to the 2010s, he became one of the most popular and influential pianists to come out of Miles' band.
