WHAT:   The Bitches Brew panel at Mondo.NYC will analyze the life and times of Miles Davis, culminating in his groundbreaking recording Bitches Brew in 1969.The discussion will explore the circumstances and coincidences that propelled Davis and his music into the pop cultural lexicon, as viewed through the lens of cultural, social, technological and political implications. Video and audio examples will be presented.

Ranked as one of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,”  the landmark recording marks one of many times that the internationally renowned music icon has changed the course of music.

Led by drummer Lenny White, who played on the original Bitches Brew sessions, the panel features Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis) and Vince Wilburn, Jr. (nephew of Miles) who currently plays with Miles Electric Band.  Mark Ruffin, SiriusXM “Real Jazz” Program Director is Moderator.

 

The panel is based on a Miles Davis course that White is currently teaching at NYU, broken down as follows:

–  An intimate look at the actual recording process of Bitches Brew

–  How Miles Davis changed the musical landscape with his genius masterpiece

–  The events preceding the recording; the cultural temperature of the day

–  The effect on people and the culture after the recording

The panel will also demonstrate how Miles seamlessly fuses the classic with the contemporary – and why he continues to generate so much attention nearly thirty years after his passing.

COMMENTS:     Miles Davis remains one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of music.  Bitches Brew is often heralded as a cornerstone of fusion, but Miles never paid much attention to labels. Intrigued by rock instrumentation, this brooding masterpiece showcases the man with the horn doing what he did best, stretching boundaries and confounding expectations. Hear how the music evolved during the sessions and in the mixing and editing process. Explore this pivotal moment in Miles’ discography.
