ALTON, IL. — The Miles Davis Memorial Project committee, responsible for fundraising for the Downtown Alton Miles Davis statue, has reached its goal to ensure completion of the project.
… Plans for the statue’s unveiling on Sept. 12 include the closing of W. Third Street from Piasa to Belle streets, an event stage in front of the statue plaza located next to Chez Marilyn, and a performance from 5 to 7 p.m. by Davis devotee, trumpeter Kasimu Taylor and his band.
The plaza on which the statue will rest was designed by architect Barry Moyer. Customized bricks and granite blocks form a large five-line music staff, with the granite as spaces between the lines. The bronze Miles Davis statue, created from an iconic Davis photograph by sculptor Preston Jackson, will rest on a pedestal resembling an eighth note.
