Switzerland’s legendary Montreux Jazz Festival—first established in 1967 and which quickly grew to international prominence—has presented countless musical legends, and not just jazz. But jazz has always been its mainstay. Each summer, it has welcomed international audience over the years to the various venues situated on the shores of picturesque Lake Geneva. It is truly one of the most beautiful areas in which to hear music.
From the outset, festival founder Claude Nobs made a habit of recording all performances, and the archive yielded many popular albums by the likes of Bill Evans, Les McCann and Eddie Harris, Monty Alexander, and Sun Ra. It was inevitable that eventually the sum of Miles’s performances in Montreux would be collected and released; in 2002, Warner Music did exactly that.
The Complete Miles Davis at Montreux: 1973-1991 is comprised of full performances from 17 different concerts in eight different visits to Montreux. Featured are some truly historic moments, such as his 1973 band—with Dave Liebman, Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas, and Michael Henderson—in full flight; a 1986 concert with guitarist Robben Ford and keyboardist George Duke sitting in; and his celebrated 1991 return to the music he recorded with Gil Evans, featuring an 18-piece band, produced and conducted by Quincy Jones.
