In June 1972, Miles Davis entered Columbia’s 52nd St. Studios to record music that was eventually released as On The Corner and part of Big Fun – stuff that was so far out and future perfect, it was its own genre. The Complete On The Corner Sessions is a collection of more than 6 1/2 hours of music covering Miles’ studio recordings from 1972-1975 – including over two hours of previously unreleased material, plus five tracks available for the first time in unedited form – whose reputation precedes it and retains the signature spirit of an artist ever-changing.
As a bandleader, bringing in influences as diverse as funk, R&B, jazz, world, rock and 20th century classical music – Miles was breaking down boundaries and creating a music whose elements could be extracted for any musical genre, and in turn influenced a whole new generation of artists. This innovation of style, in concert with producer Teo Macero’s creative editing technique, laid the foundation and informed whole new genres… drum & bass, hip-hop, electronica.
This box set tells the compelling story of a three-year odyssey of genre-defying innovation that rocked the jazz establishment. In addition to core band members Michael Henderson, Pete Cosey, Mtume, Dave Liebman, Reggie Lucas and Al Foster, Miles brings in another 20 hand-picked musicians between 1972-1975, each bringing their own musical influences to the group’s sound. Miles again sets new standards, creating an unparalleled legacy.
