As his Prestige sessions revealed, Miles slowly returned to a looser, blowing feel in his recordings—retreating from the more formal structures and prepared language of the Birth of the Cool. “Bluing”—from the same session as “Dig”—became a full album side on Miles’s 10” LP Blue Period, on which Weinstock combined it with two other tunes mentioning blue in the title (“Blue Room,” “Out Of The Blue”) to create an early example of a thematic approach to collecting tracks for an album.
Prestige’s 12” LP Dig, released in 1955, brought together various tracks from The New Sounds and Blue Period.
