Statement from The Wallace Roney Estate:

Greetings, family and friends,

These past twelve months have been among the most trying times of our lives. The loss of so many to COVID-19 has affected us all in some capacity. For the Wallace Roney Estate, today marks one year since the passing of the preeminent Wallace Roney, trumpet innovator, composer, band leader, educator, and pillar of Jazz and African American culture. As the only protégé to be taken on by Miles Davis, Wallace was recognized and accepted by the luminaries of Jazz that included Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Woody Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie and the list goes on. Wallace not only walked amongst giants; he was one.

Serving as an apprentice with great leaders like Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and Horace Silver, Wallace understood the importance of “paying it forward”. This was shown through his commitment to using young musicians in his bands. Wallace would frequently say, “The bandstand is the greatest classroom you can find.” Through nurturing his crop of young artists, Wallace was paving the way for the next generation of leaders and innovators.

Ultimately, Wallace would leave this world before he could bestow the many gifts he had yet to share and projects he had yet to create. Nonetheless, we find comfort in having known him for his rich style, amazing technical ability as a trumpeter, musical innovator, educator, and pillar of the Jazz community. Personally, he will be remembered as a loving companion, father, brother, son, grandson, and friend with a beautiful smile. Always taking time to assist and inspire others in fulfilling their dream. Although he is no longer physically with us, Wallace’s spirit will always live on through his musical contribution to the world and in the lives of everyone he has touched.
