Miles Davis ‘Sorcerer’ Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

Sorcerer, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this month, was the second of five albums Miles Davis recorded with his “second great quintet”: saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. The album finds Miles in the role of collaborative bandleader, playing original material written entirely by members of his band and paving the way for more experimental material in the years to follow. The album closes with a brief version of “Nothing Like You” from a 1962 session with vocalist Bob Dorough and arranger Gil Evans-the first time Miles and Shorter ever recorded together.
