New Book ‘Blue Notes in Black and White’ Examines Miles Davis and the Jazz Image

Miles Davis, supremely cool behind his shades, still defines the image of jazz for his many fans. Benjamin Cawthra’s lively new history, Blue Notes in Black and White: Photography and Jazz, is an exploration of jazz photography unlike any book before it, and Miles Davis fans will want to check it out.

Cawthra, who curated the first major museum exhibition on Davis, explores relationships among the musicians, photographers, designers, editors, and music executives who collaborated—happily or otherwise—in crafting a look for jazz. He devotes the central chapter to Miles Davis’s image during his Columbia years, when the jazz man became a pop star.
