Listen: ‘Circle’ Alternate Version From ‘Miles Davis Quintet – Freedom Jazz Dance’

In the fall of 1966, the Miles Davis Quintet were recording cuts for what would become the group’s 1967 album Miles Smiles. The album’s second track, “Circle,” was recorded on Oct. 24, 1966 at Columbia Records’s 30th Street Studio, with the sixth take becoming the studio version. The fifth take of that song — also recorded that day – has premiered at The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy today.

Listen to the track now, which is featured on Miles Davis Quintet – Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series Vol. 5, out this Friday.
